Ron Paul’s personal pork projects

Posted by chip91 on August 19, 2007

According to the Houston Chronicle, Paul:

...leads the Houston-area delegation in the number of earmarks, or special funding requests, that he is seeking for his district. He is trying to nab public money for 65 projects, such as marketing wild shrimp and renovating the old movie theater in Edna that closed in 1977 — neither of which is envisioned in the Constitution as an essential government function.

Here is a list of some of the pork that Paul has applied for.

1. $25,000 for the Brazoria County Sheriff to establish a “Children’s Identification and Location Database.”

2. $8 million for the marketing of wild American shrimp.

3. $2.3 million for shrimp fishing research.

4. $3 million to “secure the acquisition of the McGinnes tract, protecting its critical natural resources and helping consolidate refuge inholdings.”

5. $5 million to expand the cancer center at Brazosport Hospital.

6. $200,000 for the Matagorda Episcopal Health Outreach Program to fund a “National Health Service Corp Scholar.”

7. $4.5 million to study the effects of the health risks of vanadium.

8. $3 million to test imported shrimp for antibiotics. (Does anyone think there is a big shrimp industry in Paul’s district?)

9. $10 million to repair the Galveston railways causeway bridge.

10. $1.18 million for “Personalized Medicine in Asthma”

11. $100,000 for a “data-driven automated system for nursing students on the Texas Gulf Coast.”

12. $257,000 to “prepare graduates from the doctoral program at the University of Texas Medical Branch School of Nursing to assume faculty roles in schools for nursing with a deficient number of doctoral level faculty.”

13. $1.4 million to buy buses for the Golden Crescent Regional Commission.

14. $2 million to buy buses for Galveston.

15. $5 million for highway spending.

16. $2 million to replace facilities for Galveston bus service.

17. $3 million to replace facilities for the Golden Crescent Regional bus facility.

18. $2 million to repair the Galveston trolley.

19. $2.14 million to renovate the Edna Theater.

20. $13 million for I-69 highway project.

21. $30 million the Texas Maritime Academy to refurbish a ship.

22. $4.5 million to maintain Cedar Bayou. Plus another $9 million

23. $15 million for “construction at GIWW Matagorda Bay.” Plus another $5.8 million

24. $100,000 to maintain Chocolate Bayou.

25. $2.5 million to maintain Double Bayou.

You should have done more research on this before blogging.

There’s a big point about Paul’s earmarks that you’re missing.

  2. dumpydooby said

This is rather disingenuous. Paul applied for those programs to be funded in his district if he was given the budget to do so. When it came to voting for that budget, he voted against it.

In other words: Paul effectively said, “I don’t want my taxpayers to be spending their money on government subsidies, but if they are, then I may as well try to get that money back to my district.”

Has YOUR local representative ever done that for you? Probably not. Go fuck yourself.

  3. Dick Clark said

This is just deception. Ron Paul voted against these appropriations along with the rest of the spending bills they were included in. He passes along all requests that he receives without prejudice, and then votes against the spending. How is that unprincipled?

  4. jp said

How gullible can you be????? He votes against it ONLY because he knows the budget with all his pork in it will pass anyway!!! he gets to keep his talking point for his gullible supporters and gets all this pork for his district.

Its absurd to rail against pork and congressmen that get it for their districts when he does the exact same thing, Ron Paul is part of the problem. If he was legit and ‘principled’ he would not request $1 in pork, if he actually believed his own bs his supporters eat up. Just like gullible lib voters and the “do as I say, not as I do” Dem/Lib politicians.

  5. What you highlighted isn’t pork. They are necessary expenditures that every state, especially his home state of Texas needs and is urged to putt into bills.

Most of the things highlighted by this blog were not pork whatsoever, seeing as how pork is wasteful spending to earn the esteem of lobbyists and their ilk, but what you highlighted was not that bad. It was all necessary. A very lame attempt to smear Ron Paul. Not good.

these are EARMARKS you gullible nut, that by definition means they are PORK and not part of the general budget.

the paultards really are cult worshippers.

I find it hillarious the only guy witha conservative record is getting bashed for this…

seriously.. do you have nothing better to do? The rest of the candidates running for president have way more pork and horrible records as governors, representatives and mayors…

you will have to do better than that skippy

What part of “VOTED AGAINST THE BILL” does this propaganda spewing sack of lies site fail to understand?

Is it a lack of intelligence, integrity or both?

Whoever runs this blog is a Neo-Con sycophant. If that is your cup of tea, Ok, you have your opinion, and are allowed. Caveat Lector though. This blog has nothing to do with Libertarians, or conservatives. It is a Neo-Con hit blog. Just so anyone who reads this who may be taken in by the blogs title understands.

In addition, I think you are missing the point of what is happening here.

Constituent says ” We need $2.14 million to renovate the Edna Theater.”

Ron Paul thinks to self “I disagree with this. However, this is my constituent, and it is my sworn duty to put this request to a vote.”

Vote happens. Unlike almost every other politician I have ever seen, an earmark that a citizen requested that was personally disagreed with by a politician went to a vote anyway. Paul votes against. Rest of congress votes however they feel is their duty.

It passing or not is out of his hands. He did as a citizen asked, as is their right. I can’t recall a pro-gun guy putting though a county government request for trigger locks to hand out, or a socialist Democrat putting through a request for something they would oppose. They don’t do that. Your voice had better match theirs, or you get no representation.

Sounds to me like there is someone who will hear you, and allow you to be heard, even if they disagree. That is what America should strive to be.

  10. Larry said

A slight failure of understanding I believe is had hear. Earmarks do NOT increase the amoung of money being spent in a budget, they request that certain portions of the already requested amount be “EARMARKED” toward certain projects and concepts. PORK is tacked onto a bill to get additional funding for something often times unrelated to the bill. PORK is unconstitutional. Earmarks are not. So jp, your argument has a blinding fallacy in that you fail to understand what earmarks are in the first place. Essentially by passing on the earmarks but voting against the bill, Paul is saying, “I disagree with this budget but if it passes I want to make sure my district receives their fair portion.”

  11. This blog can be easily summed up by looking at the blogroll links to Romney, Giuliani and Thompson, all a bunch of treasonous, Big Government, Socialist, Globalist (as opposed to Constitutionalist), North American Unionist, Anti-Liberty, Police-State loving, Neocon, War-mongering, Zionist, CFR turds. Don’t waste your time here because you are talking to a wall of lies and propaganda.

I must be missing something. I don’t exactly see a bridge to no where here. Nice try, but you really don’t make your point. Someone isnt paying you enough.

    Love it.

He votes against it, KNOWING the thing will pass anyway, and he gets his cake while saying “I was against” the THING HE INTRODUCED!!!

Vagena Hurtz (RP) is Dennis Kucinich with cleaner sneakers.

  14. spikecohen said

    Quick question for the Paulies:

If he were truly against pork spending, why wouldn’t he respectfully refuse to apply for these earmarks?

    *crickets*

As he has said numerous times, he has an obligation to uphold the Constitution.

Just another D.C. porkmonger. At least Robert Byrd is honest about it.

“If he were truly against pork spending, why wouldn’t he respectfully refuse to apply for these earmarks?” – Spikecohen

I think Ron Paul’s approach to this problem is both consistent and respectful of his individual constituents. By voting against ALL unconstitutional budget appropriations (not just the ones where his constituents get no benefit anyway) he maintains consistency and his constitutional principles. By passing on his district’s requests, he does not force unwilling martyrs out of his constituents in the event that his efforts fail and the appropriation is passed. Members of his district who willingly wish to bear the burden of being taxed, refusing all subsidies, and then still competing with businesses in other regions that may have accepted subsidies funded in part with their tax money, can chose to do so on a voluntary basis.

Why wouldn’t he just refuse to pass on requests for earmarks? Because the only thing that would accomplish is a guarantee that the individuals and families in his district always suffer a loss (pay taxes like everyone else and get nothing back to their locality) if these spending bills get passed.

The real indicator is his voting record against these types of budget appropriations, and it is spotless. No other candidate can claim the same thing. I can’t think of a better approach to opposing unconstitutional spending and redistributionist policies.

  16. spikecohen said

    Adbay, Vagena’s not stupid.

He knows that the earmarks will pass. So he adds it, and then votes against it. He gets his cake and eats it too.

And you’re spinning for him. In one paragraph, you say “why should they have to pay taxes and not get anything back?” which is the classic argument for pork spending. Next you say his record is “spotless”. Obviously not. How many billions of dollars of OUR TAX MONEY has Vagena appropriated to local issues which should be handled by either the private sector or local government?

Forget the fact that he wants to negotiate with terrorists and bow to their demands by pulling out of Iraq and Afghanistan. The man is just as much of a big-government cronie as the rest of them!

  17. Danielle said

This all you can find on him?

He ends up voting against the bills but if they pass atleast his district has something.

THERE ARE MORE IMPORTANT ISSUES THAN THIS. So why don’t you try focusing on them?

  18. 2CAVTrooper said

All 25 of those items that paul requested should have been paid by the state or through local fundraising efforts.

It is not the responsibility of a tax payer in Ohio to pay for some renovation of some run down and long since out of business movie theater in Bumfuk Texas.

Some of the pork projects Paul voted to keep include:
$231,000 for the San Francisco Planning and Urban Research Association’s Urban Center
$129,000 for the “perfect Christmas tree project
$300,000 for the On Location Entertainment Industry Craft Technician Training Project in California
$150,000 for the South Carolina Aquarium
$500,000 for the National Mule and Packers Museum in California.

He also voted for $232 million for federally mandated election reforms.

He has requested 30 million for the Interstate 69 project AKA Trans Texas Corridor AKA NAFTA Superhighway.

    ROFLMAO!!!

I bet you paultards have the word “SUCKER” written across your foreheads since you swallow that BS he spoon feeds you hook, line, and sinker.

BTW, I hate Rudy so nice try you RINO POS.

Why did your heerow lock away those newsletters he wrote between ’85 and ’97? Why is he trying to hide his views?

Another fact about your false idol:

He has FAILED in his oath of office pertaining to Article 1 Section 8 of the Constitution since he has voted against every military budget since he was elected again in 1997.

Hmm, it is a shame to know that he requested these earmarks, but it isn’t enough to make me change my vote.

I would have liked it if he didn’t request some of these (not all) but it isn’t the worst thing a congressman could do, and it certainly isn’t comparable to anything as bad as graft.

He isn’t a saint, but he certainly isn’t scum like many of the other candidates we have running for president.

Those making this attack seem to imply that this stance with being tough on spending was just manufactured by Ron Paul to create mere talking points, but for some reason these critics do not want to go a step further and imply Ron Paul is really not for abolishing the IRS and limiting the government. So this is simply an attack on his consistency…

During the civil rights era, many militant blacks were upset at other blacks trying to work within the system to influence change. To the militants, you cannot work with what you are trying to overthrow. And in a sense that is true for those that believe in radical change. But the fact is that for those working within the system, they must compromise and promote gradual change of direction. This is what Ron Paul has been doing for the past 30 years.

We cannot ignore that presently we DO have the IRS, and we DO pay income tax. So the responsibility of the representative must deal with this reality. As long as we know Ron Paul is committed to the end goal of limiting government spending, then attacks like this are completely worthless. Going back to my example, the implications of those that make these accusations suggests they could believe it was possible for an uncompromising black millitant to promote change within the White-American system. Its not going to happen, so its ignorant to think Ron Paul is inconsistent because he works with the system we have. Ignorant.

I frankly don’t care what Ron Paul voted for or didn’t vote for. I know what his message has been. Ron is 72 years old and the concept that he has put before the public will have a life of it’s own long after Ron Paul is worm food.

I am a Ron Paul supporter and a main stream business owner in financial services. I learned from my grand father (born in the late 1800s) about the history of our country and how the country changed from a gold standard to the current situation with reserve notes. I was a teenager in the 1970 during Arab oil embargo. I watch the global financial markets each day and while people are arguing over who said what, the global financial markets are unwinding with increased instability.

It won’t be long (not next week or next month but it’s on the way)and you won’t care who said what because your first priority is going to be where you will live and where your next meal is coming from.

We are going to find out if Ron Paul is full of #### or if he is not.

Whether he is or is not doesn’t matter to me because I know that you or I can’t go out and spend money from our checking account without consequences; we can go get a credit card and when we max it out, we get hit with 34% default interest rates and our account gets closed.

At some point, the foreign lenders (our credit card lenders) are going to tell us we have reached our credit limit.

Currently, 100% of all taxes collected go toward paying only the interest on the debt. That is the same as a home mortgage that is interest only where the balance is never paid down. That is OK as long as the home continues to appreciate, but as we see in California and Florida, our assumptions can often fail to remain reality.

Look at the California real estate market, and simply rename it the US and global economic situation. It is “highly probable” that a similar scenario is what we all have to look forward to.

If your own personal finances were upside down, creditors called you on the phone, your lights were getting cut off and your car being towed in the middle of the night, then what would YOU do on a personal level to turn your life around?

Probably start all over; declare bankruptcy. But you would most certainly have to realign your finances to where you earned more than you spent; if you were smart and learned ANYTHING at all, you would make a sincere effort to not make the same mistake again.

I worked with people who grew up and were in their mid 20’s during the great depression of the 1930s and they had a a rabid disdain for debt and worked to save for the future. It was these pre-baby boomers who worked and saved the money to build this country up. They fattened up the cow and the next generation came along to suck off the tit of that cow and now threaten to slaughter her for her meat.

What is happening in our country today is not unusual and is quite predictable.

Each society rises up with visionaries, builders come and create the infrastructure, then the manager, then the bureaucrat who promises the public mana from heaven for the vote, then the country is unable to sustain itself and collapses only to begin the birthing process again. There are many instances of this in the history books and YOU happen to simply be living in that phase of history. And one day, you and I will be worm food just like Ron Paul and the world will just keep on truckin’.

In the mean time, while I’m still walking up-right, breathing air and eatin’ carrots, I’m about to be a new precinct chair and I am going to work to help educate the people in my local precinct and to help raise their awareness of the need for fiscal responsibility. I am going to work to be one of those thousands of people who work to support a country that respects the laws of sound economics, respect for our foreign and domestic responsibilities and our personal freedoms and liberties. I want to work hand in hand with others to find a peaceful way to address the issues before someone or a group of someones decides that violence is the answer.

I’m a no-name, nobody, but I’m going to do my best to make my little corner of the United States a little bit better. Whether you agree with me or not, I hope you also will do the same for OUR country. For my brothers and sisters, kids and grand kids and YOURS to.

    Respectfully

    R
